Download & installation FAQ

Which version should I download?

Use the native installer for your platform — it's the fastest option. macOS: pick Apple Silicon (.dmg) for M1/M2/M3/M4, or Intel (.dmg) for older Macs. Windows: download OPAL-Setup.exe. Linux: AppImage works on most distributions without installation. If you're on a managed machine where the installer is blocked, use the portable version.

What is the portable version and when should I use it?

The portable version is a self-contained ZIP that runs on macOS, Windows, and Linux with no installation or admin rights. Extract it anywhere and run — your data is stored inside the folder so the app is completely portable. It's useful on enterprise-managed machines where the native installer is blocked or requires an admin to sign off. Read the portable version guide →

Does the portable version require installation?

No. Extract the ZIP to any folder, then run start.bat on Windows or start.sh on macOS and Linux. Nothing is written outside the extracted folder.

Windows SmartScreen is blocking the installer

Click More info → Run anyway. SmartScreen warns on infrequently-downloaded software. If your machine policy blocks all unsigned installers, use the portable version — it requires no system-level install and bypasses SmartScreen entirely.

macOS says OPAL can't be opened

Go to System Settings → Privacy & Security and click Open Anyway next to the OPAL entry. This is a one-time step. See the installation guide for details.

Where can I find older releases?

All releases — including older versions and their portable ZIPs — are on the OPAL releases page on GitHub ↗.
